Executive Board Member, University of San Diego Black Student Union

About

Iruka Obinelo is a senior at the University of San Diego, pursuing a diverse academic path in Psychology, Business, and French.

Raised on the East Coast by two Igbo immigrant parents, she has always been deeply committed to advocacy and active engagement within the African diaspora.

Iruka currently serves on the Executive Board of her university’s Black Student Union and African Student Union, where she works to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities. In addition to her leadership roles,

Iruka is conducting research in the psychology department, focusing on Black women’s self-esteem. Her research explores the societal, cultural, and familial influences that shape Black women’s identity and self-perception. By shedding light on the complexities of how these factors intersect with beauty standards and self-worth, she aims to contribute to a broader understanding of the unique challenges Black women face.

Ultimately, Iruka’s work aspires to inform more inclusive and supportive frameworks for fostering positive self-esteem among Black women. This mission is a personal and professional passion that drives her advocacy and day-to-day interactions."
